An Untapped Resource

On a cool, crisp October morning a 15 passenger van pulled around the corner to the United Way building. 12 volunteer climbed out of the van eager to get to work.
They were greeted by Austin Rowlader who was just as eager to share his pet project with them. This was to be the second work party at the HandsOn and United Way Community Garden. The group quickly got to work filling new planter boxes with soil. The plan was to pull weeds and place, level and fill 6 planter boxes. The volunteers worked quickly and completed everything. This might seen like just another great volunteer group, but they are unique. This group is from the Oregon State Hospital. They are living proof that everyone can serve. Everyone deserves the chance to serve. Examine your own volunteer program. Are there ways you can invite marginalized populations to give back to your organization? Give them the chance to give back.
